Grandmaster Buzz Durkin

Judan (10th Degree Black Belt)

Buzz Durkin began his study of Uechiryu in 1966 and opened his now internationally renowned school in 1974. Mr. Durkin was one of the first Americans to travel to Okinawa for the express purpose of Uechi training (1971). He is a member of the Uechiryu Hall of Fame and currently holds the rank of Judan.

Sensei Durkin is the headmaster of the Uechiryu Butokukai, which was established in 1984. He has produced over 60 Uechiryu master ranking students and under his guidance 13 Uechiryu dojos have flourished. Mr. Durkin is one of a handful of persons worldwide who has received a special commendation from the late Grandmaster Kanei Uechi for his contributions to the development and expansion of Uechiryu.

Sensei Durkin was the first in the history of Uechiryu to institute a Jr. Black Belt program. This program has now flourished world-wide and has led to the development of thousands of young Uechi black belts.

His book “Success is Waiting,” endorsed by many of the top talents in the martial arts world, is acknowledged as a road map for a more successful practice.
