We all are so proud of you for 9 years of dedication to Karate. It’s been such a joy watching you grow and mature during this time. Your perseverance has been inspiring. You’ve pushed through night classes ( sometimes two in one night) when you’ve already completed a full day of school (including after school sports) or work. You’ve multitasked your other extracurriculars while always giving 100 percent effort at the dojo. Karate has been such a constant influence on your life and I see how much it’s helped shape the confident young man that you are today.

Back in 1996, my parents signed me up for classes at Buzz Durkin’s Karate School after I had been picked on in school a little too much. I still remember my mother commenting on the change in my confidence level that she saw in just walking from our house to the bus stop when school started back up that fall. I often think about the kid that I was back then and wonder where he would be now without the training that I’ve been so fortunate to receive over the years. As a high school music teacher, I am in front of over 100 students every day. If I could go back in time and tell my younger self what I do for a living, I’m not sure he would even have the confidence to engage in the conversation (though as a huge “Back to the Future” fan he might question the risk I was taking at letting my younger self see me). I am forever grateful for the experiences that I have had over the years. Though I’ve taken a number of years off here and there over these past 28 years, I always seem to find my way back. Thank you to everyone who has been a part of the journey to this point and beyond!

One of my favorite quotes is by Maya Angelou. She said “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel”. This resonates to my years in the dojo. There is no competition, only support. No matter what my mood is entering, it’s always improved after a workout. I’d like to thank my husband who happens to also be my best friend for bringing me to the dojo so many years ago. Without his love and support, I wouldn’t be who I am today. Thank you to my kids and dojo family as well. I feel very fortunate to have you all in my life.
